Split is one of the most antique cities in the Adriatic as testifies its most relevant monument/the cradle of the city, Diocletian's palace which is under the UNESCO-s protection since it is considered to be the best conserved monument of the late antics. Besides roman ruins of the palace whole the historic centre of the city represents a unique example of architecture within the architecture: throughout the streets is evident a fascinating marriage of different artistic styles. The rich historic and cultural patrimony of Dalmatia is being held in numerous museums in the centre of the city, we shall mention only the most important ones: Archaeological museum, Museum of Croatian archaeological monuments, Naval museum, Ethnographic museum and Ivan Mestrovic's Art Gallery. Creative art of nowadays is excellently represented in few city-s art galleries which are all situated in the centre of Split. At only several kilometres outside the city You can visit numerous localities which bear an extreme historical and cultural heritage: Trogir, Salona, Klis, Knin, Sibenik and, last but not the least the island of Central Dalmatia which are connected to Split with everyday ferryboat lines. Cultural manifestations: throughout the year Split offers numerous cultural manifestations among which surely a particular place belongs to Splitsko Ljeto (split-s Summer - theatre festival which is held from the half of July until the half of August and on which participate artists from around the world), Splitski festival (pop music festival held in the half of August), Marulic-s Days (literary meetings and theatrical manifestations held in April). |
