On the outside bay of the peninsula that spreads into the Adriatic Sea under the impressive mountain-massif, the Roman Emperor Diocletian , at the end of the third century AD had his summer residence built. Today, it is the most preserved Roman emperor palace which as one of the most famous arhitectural constructs of late antiquity fills with admiration at the present time, too. After the ruin of the Roman empire, next to thick walls of the Palace, the town of Split starts to develop. |
So, from the Diocletian's time untill today, the town of Split has gradually expanded. Throughout its long history, life in the town goes along in easy, relaxed tempo. Today when town is celebrating 1700 years , it represents the largest town, sport, business, cultural centre of South Croatia. Due to trade and size, Split is the second-largest harbour in the eastern Adriatic coast. Favourable climate conditions with over 200 sunny days per year, makes Split even more attractive destination. Mediterranean climate with landward breeze is one reason more for visiting the town at the foot of the Marjan hill. Due to its traffic services in summer months, Split harbour is included among five busiest destination in the Mediterranean. |
